Program of the visit of the representatives of the Embassy of Colombia in the Russian Federation

On June 21 – 23 BSTU named after V.G. Shukhov is receiving the delegation representing the Embassy of the Republic of Colombia, which has arrived on a business visit. The delegation includes 8 members: the officials of the Embassy, high-ranking businessmen and those who are only starting their own business. The Head of the Delegation – H.E. Diego Jose Tobon Echeverri, the ambassador of Colombia in Russia.
The major goal to visit Belgorod: promoting cooperation in the area of education, extending contacts with higher educational institutions in Belgorod oblast, with BSTU in particular.
As we know, the cooperation with the countries of Latin America is developing in various areas, which is supported by the visits of Russian leaders to this region. The higher professional education level, which the citizens of Colombia have received in Russia will contribute to realize the most complicated challenges for the state. To Belgorod it represents a splendid opportunity for economic cooperation far beyond the areas of education and science.

Colombia (Spanish - Colombia), officially the Republic of Colombia (Spanish: República de Colombia) is a state in northwestern South America. Capital city — Bogotá. Colombia is bordered to the east by Venezuela and Brazil, to the south by Ecuador and Peru; to the northwest by Panama. It is washed to the north by the Caribbean Sea and to the west by the Pacific Ocean.
18 % of the population are engaged in agriculture, 5 % of land is used is for planting, 38 % — for grazing. The most fertile soils are located on the plateau and some valley regions. Colombia is the second world coffee producer. Cotton and tobacco represent commercial crops for mountainous regions. Plantations for export agricultural crops like bananas, flowers and sugarcane are located in the lowlands. Rice, maize, potatoes and sorghum are grown for the inner market needs. As to animal industries, cattle, swine and sheep breeding are prevailing.
Colombia has vast mineral deposits, concentrated mainly in the mountainous regions in the Andes: gold, silver, platinum, emeralds (90 % of globally extracted, mineral coal (12,5 mln ton/year), oil (19 mln ton/year), natural gas. The deposits of copper, mercury, lead and manganese have been developed. Uranium deposits are known, however no official data of mining is known.
For the last 20 years machine building, processing, footwear, chemical and textile industries have experienced rapid growth. Food industry is mainly engaged in the processing of sugarcane, rice, vegetables and fruit.
30 % of electric power is generated by thermal power stations, the other 70 % by hydro electric power stations in the Andes. The development of land transport is hindered by long distances, swamps, forests, mountains with few people living in the areas. Preference is given to air transport. The total length of railroads is 4160 km and over 100 000 km of highways, including the major highway of international significance across Colombia and joining Venezuela and Ecuador. Almost 670 aerodromes are in Colombia these days.
River navigation network is over 14 000 km long.
Spanish is an official language of Colombia, spoken by all citizens throughout the country with the exception of some Indian tribes. Almost 75 local Indian languages have been preserved on the territory of Colombia, however, their number is decreasing.
The representatives of the Republic of Colombia have scheduled visits to higher educational institutions of Belgorodia, meeting the local government officials, inspection of farming and agricultural facilities in the region.

June 21 9-00 – anniversary greetings addressed to BSTU president, professor, Dr. Anatoly Mitrofanovich Grinchin, 10-30 – tour of Belgorod and visit to Diorama museum. 14-30 – meeting in the office of Y.V. Kovrizhnykh, deputy-Chairman of local Government, head of the department for education, culture and Youth affairs at Belgorod oblast Government (June 21, 14-30). 16-00 – Excursion to the memorial place “The Field of Prokhorovka”. June 22 9-50 – Flower laying ceremony to the monument to V.G. Shukhov 10-00 – meeting with BSTU Chancellor, Dr. S.N. Glagolev. 10-30 – tour of the university (laboratories at the mechanical equipment department, main security checkpoint, museum, German and French Centre, section of nanosystems in building materials science, section of railway transport, exhibition centre, students arts centre, business-incubator, faculty of distance learning technologies, construction site of the new halls of residence) 13-00 – visit to Belgorod State Agricultural Academy.
