Development of scientists from BSTU named after V.G. Shukhov will fly into space

The leadership of the Roscosmos State Corporation decided to deliver in February of this year two samples of scientific equipment made from a new type of radiation-protective composite developed by scientists from the BSTU named after V.G. Shukhov and  the Yu.A. Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center Research Institute, by the Progress MS-19 cargo spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS). Materials will be tested in outer space for 6 and 12 months.

As explained by the project leader, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor of BSTU. V.G. Shukhov, Honored Inventor of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Ivanovich Pavlenko, protective composites were developed by university scientists for several years. Pilot samples have passed numerous tests and tests on many ground-based installations that simulate outer space. The developed material has a set of unique properties: high physical and technical, structural characteristics, bacterial resistance, radiation and thermal stability in a wide temperature range. The material has high protective characteristics to proton, electron, neutron and photon radiation.

The developed material is protected by a RF patent for an invention, awarded with gold medals of the Russian and European (Romania-2021) competitions. Flight models of scientific equipment were named L-01 and L-02. The main mission of the developed material is to become a reliable protection of astronauts from cosmic radiation in the future. As the young scientist, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Chemistry Natalya Cherkashina, explained, it is based on the results of real space tests of the developed material that it will be possible to take into account the possible adjustment of its composition and design for safe flights in near and far space. The day before, a video conference was held, in which scientists from BSTU named after A.I. V.G. Shukhov, specialists of the Research Institute "TsPK im. Yu.A. Gagarin”, Institute of Medical and Biological Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Rocket and Space Corporation “Energy” named after. S.P. Korolev, as well as Russian cosmonauts Denis Vladimirovich Matveev and Sergei Vladimirovich Korsakov.

Today, cosmonauts work at the ISS RS - Hero of Russia Anton Nikolaevich Shkaplerov and Petr Valerievich Dubov. This stellar composition of Russian cosmonauts will explore the possibilities of a new protective material. The participants of the videoconference discussed to the smallest detail the scientific equipment and features of the developed material, dosimetric equipment and the installation sites of the scientific equipment with the material on the ISS RS. When confirming the high quality of the developed material, the scientists of BSTU named after. V.G. Shukhov will make a significant contribution to the development of Russian cosmonautics in the direction of ensuring the radiation safety of space flights on the reusable manned spacecraft Oryol.
