Cherry Orchard will blossom in Belgorod


 

On June 17  the Students Art Centre at Belgorod State Technological University named after V.G. Shukhov hosted an International contest to determine the best solutions for urban renovation of the historic area in the centre of Belgorod.
The initiator of this major event was the head of the city administration of Belgorod Sergei Bozhenov. The place of the competition is not accidental - Belgorod is a leading school of architecture in Russia, and its specialists are trained at the Department of Architecture in the technological university.

  

126 works of architects and urban planners from around the world took part in the competition, among them - 43 projects from Russia. Each participant had the right to submit no more than two projects. The contest was conducted anonymously by  "Project Media" company. The supervisor of the event Bart Goldhoorn is the founder of a leading professional magazine about architecture in our country "Project Russia", co-founder and curator of the Moscow Biennale of Architecture and Director of "Project Media" (Amsterdam / Moscow). The Panel of Judges also included representatives of the city administration of Belgorod, two Moscow architects - Oleg Grigoryev and Nikolai Lyashenko, professor at Technical University of Eindhoven (the Netherlands), Peter Van Vasemael.

 

  

" Such large-scale architectural competition is held for the first time in Belgorod. The works can be evaluated as highly professional, the participants masters representing different schools and trends. We have seen some very interesting solutions to many urban problems. And, of course, we will implement the most interesting parts of these works ", - said the Head of Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Belgorod region Vitaly Pertsev.

  


The results of the  contest are as follows: first place was given to architects from Milan. Italian architects Nicolo Privileggio, Marialesandra Secchi, Mateo Motti, Anton Sagal presented a project called "The Cherry Orchard". The second place was awarded to Den [City] project: architect Fabio D'Angano from Venice (Italy). The top three was complemented by Russian architects: "Grand Prix" creative team  led  by the honored architect Pavel Andreev of Russia with the project Belle-Gorod. Honorable mentions weregiven to  architects from Mexico, England, Serbia and Italy.

  


The total prize fund was 50 thousand U.S. dollars. Of these, 25,000 - to the winner, ten and five thousand will be awarded to second and third place owners (2.5 thousand dollars each).
