On a business trip In Uganda
Recently, the director of the Centre of International education and cooperation of Belgorod State Technological University named after V.G. Shukhov, Ph.D., E.V. Kapustin has been on a business visit to the University of Makarere in Kampala , the capital city of Uganda. Evgeny Kapustin shared the impressions and the results his trip with the staff of the Office of Public Affairs.
What is the purpose of your visit to the University in Uganda?
The Management of the University, headed by the rector, doctor of economic sciences, professor, S.N. Glagolev pays great attention to the development of international activities, to strengthening cooperation with foreign partners to establish friendly relations with the relevant universities in such areas such as science, culture and sports. For me, this issue has become particularly important, because our university has long been ranked in the top of the best universities in Russia.
The purpose of the visit was the signing of the agreement between the two universities for the training program in English as a language of instruction for the students from Uganda at our university for a number of specialties, including- power engineering, construction engineering, economics.
I must say that Makarere University is a leading institution of higher education in Uganda and one of the best on the African continent. The university is training 37,000 students in various specialization areas. The University has campus laboratories, dormitories, classrooms and is equipped with everything you need for productive learning. Our reliable partner and representative of the university of Makerere is Professor Tom Ottiti, who is a Nobel laureate. In the future we plan to organize the exchange of academic staff, establish a double-degree system, conduct training, training courses.
As part of the above trip I was able to attend a series of workshops, during which I was able to talk to representatives of the school administration, academic staff, students from Russia.
What can you say about the trip?
First, in Kampala we signed a preliminary agreement, the so-called memorandum of cooperation. An official document of cooperation as agreed will be signed during the visit of a delegation from Uganda to our university in September this year.
Could you tell us anything about the most interesting meetings on Ugandan land?
The most interesting meeting I had with Professor Ottiti, who proved to be quite simple and at the same time very interesting person. In addition, I managed to meet with the directors of colleges (similar to our institutions). One head of the college even spoke Russian. As it turned out, he got his higher education in Russia, where he subsequently defended his PhD thesis.
What are your overall impressions of the trip?
The schedule was very tight, so there was no free time. From what I saw in Uganda, I liked almost everything. The people are extremely friendly, the food is almost the same as ours, the streets are clean. I think our students would be very pleased to learn about it (I mean the future system of double degree), especially in this country where the official language is English. The most surprisingly was that I met a student from Russia, and there are many foreign students, especially from Europe.
